Kids, Family and the True Spirit of Mountain Biking.
Many of us strive to find The Meaning of Life, within todays materialistic society. More often then not, we get caught up in the wanting, desiring to possess the latest and greatest toys presented to us by highly paid advertising executives, not because we need to upgrade, but just to process it - as some sort of trophy object.
 |
Sometimes it takes the simplicity and genuine kindness of youth to show us the path to enlightenment. On Saturday May 6, 2006, at the Brodie Rat Race held in Roberts Creek, B.C., located on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, a gesture of love and unselfishness took place to once again demonstrate why the culture of mountain biking is so unique and special. |
During the awards ceremony for the young riders, ages 7 to 16, numerous prizes were drawn. Brodie Bicycles very generously donated a bike as the top draw prize for the young participates. Louis Dylan, from the Halfmoon Bay Sprockids Program, won the bike. Without hesitation he took hold of the mike and announced he was giving the bike to his younger brother Eric. Upon hearing this Eric bounded up to center stage and gave his older brother a bear hug. His honest and spontaneous reaction reminded everyone in the audience why we all love this sport, and the people in it. |

I started Sprockids in 1990, and since that time I have had the honor and privilege of knowing and working with a variety of young people. Youth are very special; as adults we should learn much from them! Today was just another example of how our youth can provide us with models of courage, laughter, and inspiration. Tonight, I will go to sleep with a smile on my face and another piece of my lifes puzzle firmly in place. Thank you Louis and Eric for showing me, and many others, the way!
